Training Your Staffy
Training your Staffy is going to be an exciting journey for you. You have the chance to build a strong bond with your Staffy, but only if you do this the right way.
You need to evolve your dog training from hit and miss to a fun flow of games that ultimately help shape your dog’s training to one of strong attention to you, resulting in a highly reliable Staffy.
Here are a few things to get you started.
Building engagement with your dog.
1. Use a reward such as food or a ball (notice I didn’t mention pats just yet).
2. Now, move away from your dog just slightly so they think… “Geez, where are you going? I’m going to chase you!”
3. As your dog has four fast feet and gets to you quickly, give a few pieces of food.
4. Repeat this: MOVE and FEED, MOVE and FEED.
Oops! We just created a minor issue. Your dog won’t leave you alone and keeps catching up no matter how quickly you try to move around your yard. Your dog is smart and figures these things out quickly.
Okay, time to distance yourself a bit. Next time your dog runs to you, feed them one piece of food and then toss the food just behind your dog, ensuring they SEE you do it. When they run to get it, you should turn around and run away for about 5 to 10 meters.
Once you do this, I want you to come back and tell me what just happened. Do this a few times and report back.
